Be an advocate!

Why don't students seek the treatment and support they need, or ask a friend for help? For one, students may believe that they will be punished, or even get kicked out of school. Students also don't want to be labeled as "crazy" by others. And finally, students don't think other people will understand or be sympathetic to what they are going through. But these are all misconceptions. If you are struggling, talk to someone who knows the facts, such as an advisor or a Counseling & Consultation Service (CCS) counselor (see the 'resources' tab for information about CCS.) If you are worried about a friend, you can help by letting your friend know that you care, and that you will support them throughout the treatment process.

Once you have learned the facts and sought out help, act as an advocate for others who may be struggling. The only way we can win the fight against stigma and misinformation is to talk openly and honestly about mental health issues. Silence only creates fear and needless suffering.
