How Can an Academic Advisor Help?
The following scenarios demonstrate the many ways in which your academic advisor can help you sort through any academic issues you might encounter at Ohio State:
Steven, a sophomore majoring in History, is getting ready to register for his fall quarter classes. Lat night, one of his suite mates mentioned that he had taken Yiddish 367 in the spring and really liked it. Hence, Steven wants to register for it for the fall, but he isn't sure what requirement Yiddish 367 would fulfill and whether or not he's already taken a class that meets that requirement.
By meeting with his advisor, Steven will be able to find out whether or not the courses he wants to take in the fall will satisfy his degree requirements. In addition, he'll find out what other requirements he still has to fulfill, as well as classes he can take that will satisfy them.
After researching section days and times for the classes Mary wants to take next quarter, she's finally ready to register. After logging onto http://buckeyelink.osu.edu/ and clicking on the registration link, however, she receives a notification that she is unable to schedule due to a hold that has been placed on her registration. Confused and upset, she wonders, "What is going on here?!"
Mary's advisor can help her with any problems, like registration holds, that she may encounter while registering for courses.
When John started college, he was sure that he wanted to study English/Journalism to become either a newspaper or a magazine columnist. After two quarters of coursework, though, he's starting to feel like this major wasn't what he expected, and although he really enjoyed the math class he took last quarter, he doesn't think he wants to be a math major, but perhaps there is a way to combine his interest in Math and English, he wonders.
An advisor can help John figure out which major program would be most congruent with his abilities and interests and give him direction in declaring and starting that major.
Whatever your academic question or problem may be, your academic advisor can help!
